When are efficient conventions selected in networks?

چکیده

We study the determinants of convergence to efficient conventions in coordination games played on networks, when agents focus past performance (imitative play). Previous theoretical results provide an incomplete picture and suggest potentially-complex interactions between features dynamics behavior. conducted extensive simulation (with approximately 1.12 million simulations) varying network size, interaction information radius, probability actual interaction, mistakes, tie-breaking rules, process governing revision opportunities. Our main result is that “more interactions,” be it form larger neighborhoods or a higher probability, lead less conventions. A second observation, confirming previous but partial results, large size relative (a “large world”) facilitates Third, neighborhood helps efficiency because increases visibility payoffs across network. Last, technical details dynamic specification as inertia, while often relevant for specific appear little empirical relevance space dynamics.

Pseudoreplication conventions are testable hypotheses.

Hurlbert's conceptions of pseudoreplication, such as the loss of independent replicates with repeated sampling over time and the lack of appropriate spatial interspersion of experimental units to achieve statistical independence, are really theoretical hypotheses that warrant empirical confirmation or disconfirmation. Schank and Koehnle have provided a valuable service to researchers in ecology...

Emergence of social conventions in complex networks

The emergence of social conventions in multi-agent systems has been analyzed mainly in settings where every agent may interact either with every other agent or with nearest neighbours, according to some regular underlying topology. In this note we argue that these topologies are too simple if we take into account recent discoveries on real networks. These networks, one of the main examples bein...

Estimation of additive genetic variance when base populations are selected.

A population of size 40 was simulated 1,000 times for 10 generations. Five out of twenty males were selected each generation, and each male was mated to four females to have two progeny. The additive genetic variance (sigma 2a) before selection was 10, and the initial heritability was .5. Due to covariances among animals, inbreeding and gametic disequilibrium, the genetic variance was reduced t...

Runaway sexual selection when female preferences are directly selected.

We introduce models for the runaway coevolution of female mating preferences and male display traits. The models generalize earlier results by allowing for direct natural selection on the preference, arbitrary forms of mate choice, and fairly general assumptions about the underlying genetics. Results show that a runaway is less likely when there is direct selection on the preference, but that i...

When Are Behaviour Networks Well-Behaved?

Agents operating in the real world have to deal with a constantly changing and only partially predictable environment and are nevertheless expected to choose reasonable actions quickly. This problem is addressed by a number of action-selection mechanisms. Behaviour networks as proposed by Maes are one such mechanism, which is quite popular. In general, it seems not possible to predict when beha...
